The White Dwarf Scenario Slam!

scenario-slam

Some of my most memorable role-playing experiences happened while running or playing scenarios from the pages of White Dwarf magazine. Exciting, ground-breaking, quirky – there was nothing else quite like them during the 80s heyday.

So here’s the idea: a knock-out competition to find our favourite White Dwarf scenario. A rigorous selection process was undertaken to pick the final thirty two (i.e. they’re the first 32 that popped into my head after a few glasses of red). This was followed by a random draw that gave us the following sixteen ‘ties’:

The Halls of Tizun Thane
(D&D, 18)
Slayground
(Champions, 39)
On Ealden Byrgen
(WFRP / MERP, 89)
Do Troubleshooters Dream of Electric Sheep
(Paranoia, 89)
Heart of the Dark
(Call of Cthulhu, 75)
The Ritual
(WFRP, 99)
Troubles at Embertrees
(AD&D, 34)
The Lair of the White Wyrm
(RuneQuest, 14)
The Paddington Horror
(Call of Cthulhu, 88)
The Pilcomayo Project
(Golden Heroes, 78)
An Alien Werewolf in London
(Traveller, 62)
A Day in the Life of Sector 255
(Judge Dredd, 83)
The Lone and Level Sands
(RuneQuest / AD&D, 48)
The Madcap Laughs
(Stormbringer, 95-98)
Night of Blood
(WFRP, 87)
When Mad Gods Laugh
(RuneQuest, 88)
The Dark Usurper
(Fighting Fantasy, 61-63)
Curse of the Bone
(Call of Cthulhu, 86)
The Lichway
(D&D, 9)
Smile Please
(Traveller, 65)
Ghost Jackal Kill
(Call of Cthulhu, 79)
The Dawn of Unlight
(MERP / AD&D, 64)
Green Horizon
(Traveller, 35)
The Spunng Ones
(Judge Dredd, 78)
Jorthan’s Rescue
(RuneQuest, 19)
Amber to Red
(Traveller, 26)
Operation Counterstrike
(AD&D, 28)
The Mad Dwarf
(T&T, 31)
Things Ancient & Modern
(AD&D and Call of Cthulhu, 80-81)
The Sable Rose Affair
(Traveller, 17)
The Black Broo of Dyskund
(RuneQuest, 51)
The Lair of Maldred the Mighty
(AD&D, 24)

So, how do we determine the winner of each tie?

Well, *adopts geordie accent*:

Who goes? You decide.

Simply leave your comments with your preferred winners on this blog post. Alternatively, you can reply to me on twitter (@DailyDwarf) with your preferences. (I suggest you use the hashtag #ScenarioSlam to make them easier to find.) Make sure you vote for your favourites! If you haven’t heard of / read the scenarios in a particular tie… express a preference anyway! (This is the internet, goddammit! Everyone has an opinion on the internet.)

I’ll leave voting open for a few days, and then announce the winners. The second round will then be drawn (using a velvet bag of holding and a collection of numbered balls). On we’ll all go until we get an overall winner!

Remember: vote early! Vote often!

  6. I’ll leave more detailed comment for later rounds but in general cuthulhu & traveller stuff has the edge for me. I ran traveller so was always glad of good material which helped give a “backdrop to the stars.” WD cuthulhu scenarios helped my group grasp the idea of the game, which was tricky when it was first published and we were about 14. Here’s my choices –
    Slayground
    On ealden-byrgen
    Heart if the dark
The lair of the white wyrm
    The Paddington horror
    An alien werewolf in London
    The madcap laughs
    When mad gods laugh
    The curse of the bone
    Smile please
    Ghost jackal-kill
    Green horizon
    Amber to red
    The mad dwarf
    The sable rose affair
    The black Broo of dyskund
